After a six year hiatus after the end of the series, "The X-Files" returned
to the big screen with a second feature film in July 2008.  While the film
is within the established continuity, its connections to the overall
mythology are less obvious.  With a more stand-alone plot and such a
long tenure out of the public consciousness, Chris Carter (both writer and
director) had his work cut out for him.  Was this attempt to reboot the
franchise a sleeper success or well-intentioned failure?
