It's very difficult to create a franchise out of a successful series.  "Babylon 5" was followed by the
abortive and fragmented "Crusade", and "X-Files" spawned the odd "Lone Gunmen".  Even Star Trek
ran out of juice with "Enterprise".

"Stargate: Atlantis" h
ad great promise in its first few seasons, but it struggled with character
development and plot innovation
.  With the series concluding with the fifth season in 2009, supposedly
moving into TV-movies instead in 2010, "Stargate: Atlantis" may be best remembered for untapped
potential.
Capsule reviews were written for the second season.  New reviews and commentary for the
third season and beyond w
ere covered on the Stargate: Atlantis Review Blog, starting in July 2006.
