It's very difficult to create a franchise out of a successful series. "Babylon 5" was followed by the
abortive and fragmented "Crusade", and "X-Files" spawned the odd "Lone Gunmen". Even Star Trek
ran out of juice with "Enterprise".
"Stargate: Atlantis" had great promise in its first few seasons, but it struggled with character
development and plot innovation. With the series concluding with the fifth season in 2009, supposedly
moving into TV-movies instead in 2010, "Stargate: Atlantis" may be best remembered for untapped
potential. Capsule reviews were written for the second season. New reviews and commentary for the
third season and beyond were covered on the Stargate: Atlantis Review Blog, starting in July 2006.
