It's six or seven solid books. After that he kinda loses himself but recovered with his last book, Knife of Dreams. What often impressed me is that a character introduced in say book 3 as almost an afterthought might suddenly become important in book 9.

The cast of characters in this series is a long list...

While it might seem like a minor point to some, I'd just like to point out that the title of my novel is actually "The Sorrows of Empire" (note the position of the definite article).

Other than that, thanks for the great review!

I loved the series back in the '80's (I was in high school when I read it) - but recently reread Pawn of Prophecy and wondered what I ever saw in it, for more or less the same reasons you cited. Eddings developed some vaguely interesting cultures, but must every character be a stereotype-on-the-hoof?

As I sit here sorting through recollections of it, I almost find myself wondering if the original intent was a subtle parody of the hyper-formulaic swords-and-sorcery fantasy that was endemic in the '80's. It almost works as one.

For what it's worth, the followup series, "The Malloreon", possibly suffers from an even worse flaw: it's almost exactly same story, with most of the same characters, set on a different map. A second pair of series Eddings wrote ("The Elenium" and its followup) did exactly the same thing, and when I noticed this, two chapters into the book of the followup series, I stopped reading Eddings.

Believe it or not, this is actually his best book. It only get's worse from here on out. I do not recommend going any further, it will only ruin any joy you might have gotten from this novel.

I sent you an email a couple weeks ago recommending the book series " A Song Of Ice and Fire". I just wanted to warn you that this series isn't finished yet(4 books out of 7 are published) and the author is pretty slow getting them out. I still recommend that you start reading them even before they are finished, but I have a different view on these things. I like to speculate what is going to happen next and I like the wait for the next book. It's not like you're literally waiting, there's alot of books out there.

Oh, and one other thing: While I can't say I'll join the in-depth reading group (I'm afraid of slacking, plus I'm not registered with LJ [which is, of course, the smallest of problems]), I will definitely be reading along. The threads have been handed to my RSS-feed-reader.

For a very long time, I was dismissive of the Potter franchise, because I'm not a fan of YA books in general and I can be something of a contrary soul (you might have noticed, LOL). My comments on the books have been, if nothing else, a short discourse on how I came to appreciate all of it, and how that shaped my opinions. Needless to say, I'm a solid convert (and a dedicated Snape fan)!

It occurred to me, shortly after finishing the series (which I did a while ago, this review was a holdover, of all things), that I hadn't delved into the books in as much detail as I normally would for something of such popular interest. So I've since created a reading group on LiveJournal (hp_in_depth) for that purpose. We'll be going through the books chapter by chapter from now until the premiere of the final film with an eye towards continuity, deeper context, and all out fannish madness.

Membership is currently closed, but there's a reserve list and it's open to everyone for reading.

PS: I sometimes miss the podcast, too, but I always appreciate the support! Thanks again!

Dear John,

ever since I joined your "fandom" (for lack of a better word) I have ached for reviews on the Harry Potter series. I never wanted to ask, though, since they are so much children's books and so thoroughly hyped everywhere that I was worried you might be annoyed with them as it is. It was way easier asking for your opinion on some show or another or on Ender's Game or whatnot.

I have read each of the books five or six times at the very least. I have come to love the series beyond any other book series I have ever come across and I believe saying I have a slight obsession with the material is no understatement.

That being said, I was worried for a while: What if you tear the material apart? I was, to be honest, ready for it, but I was delighted to see that the stuff you wrote on Harry Potter is pretty much what I think of the series. Obviously, I would have put loads of stuff in other words and I can't say I agree with everything you've written on the subject (I thought the first two films were some of the worst-spent time at a movie theater ever), but on the whole I am very glad you reviewed the series and that I could find so much of my own way of looking at it in those reviews. Thank you very, very much.

Keep up the good work. I'll be reading you.
Tom
